Christmas decorating has begun...

Usually I wait until December 1st to decorate for Christmas. This is a rule imposed by my dear husband who thinks it is too early to decorate before December arrives. This year, he has bent the rules. We are going to be out of town for Cheryl's wedding and for Christmas which gives us less days at home to enjoy the decorations.

Last night I set up most of the stuff I have. Every year I forget what I did the year before and have to recreate my displays. Surprisingly, the kitties haven't destroyed or knocked anything over yet. I was convinced that I would walk downstairs this morning and see at least one thing on the floor. I guess there is still time.

On Saturday we'll pick out a tree and finish up the decorating. Then I'll post pictures when everything is Christmas-y. Get ready!

Christmas Pillow Project

I have serious intentions of making Christmas pillow cases for my couch pillows. They need a little seasonal change. The design came to me out of the blue and then I found an example picture on Pinterest to guide me. I'm very excited.
Guide

I started off looking at Hobby Lobby for fabric...nothing cute. Then I went to Joann Fabrics...only one cute fabric, but I want to do a patchwork.

I finally looked on Etsy and found a myriad of super cute options. I narrowed it down the ones below. Most of them are from Riley Blake... I don't really know much about that brand except that they have very adorable options. Now I have to wait for them to arrive and then I can start sewing. I'm very excited!
I love the polar bears, penguins and Eskimo-like kids on this one.

Chocolate French Toast

I discovered this recipe a few years ago and fell in love. Chocolate French Toast has been our Christmas breakfast tradition since Charles and I have been married. It's so easy and so yummy!

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1 oz chocolate, chopped (you can use semi-sweet, dark or milk chocolate...whatever you like best)
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
bread
2 Tablespoons butter

Place milk and chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until chocolate is soft, about one minute. Stir to combine and let cool.

In a large bowl, beat together eggs, vanilla and chocolate mixture.

On skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Proceed to make French toast as usual.

We love to serve this with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar!

Christmas Menu Planning

This Christmas is the first time we are totally responsible for Christmas dinner. Every other Christmas, we have spent time with our parents and have had little to no responsibility. For some reason, I am alright with making Christmas dinner, unlike my feelings towards making Thanksgiving dinner. A ham seems a lot less intimidating than a giant turkey.

Since we've never made Christmas dinner, I had to start from scratch on my menu planning. I finally sat down yesterday, searched through recipes in my cookbooks and online, and mapped out a plan. Here's what I've decided on:

- Ham (I still have to decide where to get the ham)

- Sweet Potato Casserole

- Rolls or bread of some kind. I'm kind of feeling like making Garlic Knots. I found a recipe on a blog or online somewhere a few months ago and haven't made them yet. Garlic Knots are so yummy!

- "Smashed Potatoes". Whenever I attempt to make Twice Baked Potatoes, I always ruin the shells and end up making mashed potatoes. My husband calls them Smashed Potatoes. I think instead of using Bacon Bits, I am going to cook up actual bacon to use.

- Broccoli with Pecan Brown Butter. My husband and I are not fans of Green Bean Casserole. I know it's a big holiday tradition, but we just don't like it. We love broccoli (I'm a picky eater and this is one of the few veggies I love). I wanted to make special broccoli. I found this recipe on the Food Network website and it sounds like it would be delicious. I'll share the recipe sometime this week.

A tradition in my family is to make a birthday cake for Jesus...like we actually sing Happy Birthday to him and have candles and everything. I'm not going to do the candles and all that this year, but I do need to decide what kind of cake to make. The past couple of times I've made cake it didn't come out right, so I might make Jesus Birthday Cupcakes.
