Innsbruck, Austria

The next leg of our December getaway was to Innsbruck, Austria. Each time I visit Austria I fall more in love.

Innsbruck has a myriad of markets scattered around the town. We visited in the evening and, because it was midweek, it was not super crowded. We enjoyed the sparkling lights and holiday spirit.

One of the market streets is dedicated to fairy tales which was one of my favorite parts!

Gluhwein, of course! The vendors had a variety of mugs from different years. I liked this mug, but it was from 2019 so we didn't keep it.

Innsbruck is home to Swarovski crystal, so a Swarovski crystal tree is the centerpiece of this market.

I love, love, love folk art so when I saw there was a folk art museum in Innsbruck I added it to our itinerary. I am just so impressed with how people took everyday objects and made them beautiful.

The folk art museum is connected to the Hofkirche, so we visited that, too. Just a little tip (because we were confused), to visit both you'll need the combo ticket. The regular ticket only allows you into the Hofkirche. You cannot buy a ticket just to the folk art museum.

The hands down best part of visiting Innsbruck was our hotel! We stayed at DasMEI which was located just outside of Innsbruck in a town called Mutters. This is the view from our room!!! I was ready to move in and never leave. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Parking was free and the tram stop was just up the road for an easy trip into Innsbruck.

Our room overlooked the nearby town called Natters. This is the church we could see from our balcony.

Strolling around European towns and seeing the variety of churches never gets old. This is the church in Mutters.

Vielsalm, Belgium

We had a random long weekend and decided to drive up to Belgium. We have visited Belgium once before, but it was quite awhile ago. On our previous trip we stayed in Bruges which would be great to visit again, but we did not want to drive quite as far on this trip.

Originally we were looking at visiting Liege, Belgium. Have you heard of liege waffles? Yup... same liege. After searching the map on Airbnb, though, I found this converted military bunker and thought it would be a neat place to stay.

And now Suzie has visited six different countries!

We're not sure what the metal piece on the top means, but we joked that the place is owned by the Illuminati.

The location of the Airbnb was so idyllic! We were surrounded by fields. It was exactly the peaceful and quiet location I was looking for.

This general area of Belgium is significant in WWII history, specifically because of the Battle of the Bulge. There are museums dedicated to this history in the area, but we did not visit any. On our hike, though, I felt like I was in scenes from Band of Brothers

Adjacent to the town center was a lovely promenade around the lake. It was the perfect spot for an evening stroll!

Vielsalm is also known for its folklore, especially their witch history. The town has a museum and annual festival dedicated to it. We did not visit the museum since I could not tell from the website if the displays were in English, but we found this broom on our stroll.

Vielsalm ended up being surprising. I was expecting a sleepy town in the middle of nowhere, but the town had quite a lot going for it! You could tell that it is a popular place for hikers and the town had a variety of restaurants. It was perfect for a weekend getaway!

Seeing Bulgaria's Communist Roots

Bulgaria has been under a variety of rulers over its history. Most well known is when it was part of the Communist Soviet bloc. Just walking through Sofia you can see the remnants of this period of their history by the number of Communist-era buildings.

When I was researching before the trip, I came across a suggestion to visit The Red Flat. This is a small museum showing a regular Bulgarian family's apartment. With your ticket (which you purchase in a really cool gift shop filled with items from local artists), you have basically unlimited time to spend in the apartment and a very thorough audio guide telling you about all aspects of the items in the home, life in Communist Bulgaria and more. It was so fascinating!

Another part of the trip that was really fascinating was the Museum of Socialist Art. After Communism fell, they took a lot of the statues erected during that time and placed them outside this museum. It is a great way to connect with history. The grounds were filled with both well-known people (like Lenin) and statues of everyday workers. There were also many statues of women which I was surprised by.

The inside of the museum had some artwork that was not as interesting, but the ticket is very affordable so why not check it out?

Dearborn, Michigan

For the next day of our Michigan trip we were in the Detroit/Dearborn area. My cousin's wedding was that evening. My parents suggested we visit Greenfield Village and/or the Henry Ford Museum. We ended up just having time for Greenfield Village. The place is HUGE! It's filled with tons of historic buildings like Edison's lab, Robert Frost's house, the Wright Brother's bicycle shop and so much more. This was my favorite part of our Michigan trip. They also have an amazing military discount. Charles got in for free!

Enjoying a post-lunch treat--Buckeye!

We closed out the evening celebrating my cousin's marriage. I saw some of my cousins that I haven't seen in at least 15-20 years. Everyone is so grown up now.

The Holy City: Fort Sumter

Did you know that Charleston, South Carolina is this year's World's Best City (according to Travel + Leisure)? My home town of Mount Pleasant is adjacent to Charleston. This July my parents rented a beach house and we all went down for a visit.
View from the beach house balcony

I was craving humidity (yes, you read that correctly) and the beautiful views of palm trees, beach and marsh. This trip satisfied all those cravings and more.

On our first full day, we visited Fort Sumter. Even though I grew up in the area I had never visited this historic site. The boat ride out to the Fort was lovely and educational.

The first thing we saw after stepping foot inside for the tour was a rifle musket demonstration. I really enjoyed this. I had just read a book that took place during the Civil War and talked a lot about firing rifle muskets. (The book is called I Shall Be Near You and I HIGHLY recommend reading it).
The USS Yorktown. We didn't visit it on this trip, but maybe next time

The rifle musket demo. I'm glad I don't have to wear that uniform on a hot summer day in Charleston

After the tour and boat ride back, we visited Jack's Cosmic Dogs for lunch. This is a Mount Pleasant/Charleston institution and, again, another place I've never patronized. My chili dog was yum, yum, yum! And the atmosphere is fun with a vintage flair.

Aloha! Pearl Harbor...enough said

By far my favorite part of visiting Hawaii was Pearl Harbor and the other WWII sites and monuments. I enjoy learning about that time period, so it was neat to see it all up close.

As I mentioned in my last post, our first day in Hawaii was spent touring Pearl Harbor. We woke up bright and early to make sure to get tickets to the Arizona Memorial. We got on the first tour!

Then we walked around the park. They have a lot of plaques and such to commemorate December 7th and the many soldiers, marines, airman, and others that lost their lives in the war.

Then we hopped on the bus and headed to the Pacific Aviation Museum. It's not a huge museum (at least not compared with the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson), but they had nice displays and a ton of different planes in their hanger.

Then we toured the USS Missouri (Mighty Mo). It was neat to see how sailors live. I could not do it!

The USS Oklahoma memorial is located outside of Mighty Mo. It's just a small thing, but worth checking out.
